I am spending most of my time in the four/five year
old classroom. It is amazing how the children know that it is close to end of
the school year for them; they end on June 7th. They are having a hard time focusing and
listening and the teacher is using incentives to get them to pay attention. She
has a treasure box, surprise toys she does not take out often, a reward chart, and
allows the children to take longer turns at the computer if they have had good
days. This has helped, however she has center time now twice in the morning to
allow the children more free choice time and social interaction at reasonable
levels and this has made it better. I have noticed that this has improved because
the children are now ready to move on; they learned what they had to, (they are reviewing) and now
they can practice what they have learned as they play. They share, role plays,
write, and communicate in all centers of the classroom. This is the area of
interest for my paper and I am witnessing it live; how children learn through
play and integrating the arts into their curriculum and schedule.
I find this
to be a challenge myself in my classroom because my students are also acting up
a bit and I think they are bored. We have been on the same schedule for the
whole year. I too am changing things up a little and making things more unpredictable
to keep the students interested and wondering what will happen next. Having
discussions with them about their likes and interests keeps them wanting to
hear about each other’s story.
As I spent time with the director, there were many
things she was tending to at once. She has been working as a director for
twenty years. Her main concern are the students, however she deals more with
the parents and the teachers. There are always parent concerns or complaints.
The teachers need help with students, getting supplies, or cleaning the room.
The director has a lot to manage such as, payroll hours, children’s safety and
health, sufficient food and supplies. The director is involved in the classrooms;
she always walks around observing the activities in each classroom and since
she brings tours throughout the days, loves to see the children learning in
areas of the classrooms through play. After speaking with her, she says that
the majorities of the parents care about their child being happy, safe, and
respected above all and wants the education and learning to happen alongside
that. It was great to see the school and classroom through her vision and to
have play be such an acceptable part of every classroom, from infants though
pre-kindergarten.
Victoria,
ReplyDeleteI too work with 4 and 5 year old children and they are totally amazing! It is so exciting to see them grow and move closer and closer towards Kindergarten. Directors have a lot to deal with but that is their job. Taking on a large load can be a lot (as we know through taking classes online). Children should be the top priority over anything the director has. The children are what keeps the teachers there and the center. What other kinds of duties does your director take on besides the typical director duties? I am curious to know also what type of center this is?
My director also holds the Parent Advisory Committee of the school, overlooks the lesson plans of the classrooms, and manages everything from teacher schedules to making the food orders. This is a private preschool for infants six weeks old to kindergarten and has an afterschool program as well.
DeleteI think the idea of allowing children to work in centers twice per day is a great way to change up the routine and allow them more time engaged in child led activities that they are ready for at this point in the year. This is a great way for them to take all of their newly formed concepts and put them to work as they engage with their peers and teachers can observe children using their higher levels of thinking and problem solving and get some excellent records at the end of the school year. It really is important to keep the classroom fresh and new to prevent boredom which leads to behavior problems.
ReplyDeleteArts integration is an excellent topic for this paper. have you had the Teaching Social Studies and Arts course?
Thank you for your comment. Yes, I did take the Social Studies course and it has helped me a lot, thanks.
DeleteHello Victoria,
ReplyDeleteI worked with 3 and 5 year old for 10 years and they are so much fun to work with. I enjoy their curiosity and their interest in everything they see. I think you are in a great setting and the environment is great as well because you said that the director is always walking around and making sure everything is running smooth.
Victoria this is fantastic, I think it is so important for the director to be involved in the classroom because teachers need that extra support. We don't see many directors involved in the classroom due to what you said before; they have so much to do and they are constantly busy.
Yes, I think that our director is great. SHe is alwasy busy with tons of other things, however she knows that we work very hard and her support means a lot to us. She always puts herself in our sches and remembers when she was the teacher that needed a breather every now and then.
DeleteSo many times because of standardized testing and trying to push kids to expose learn the standards we have made learning not fun. We need to remember they're kids and not businesses and teach so they'll learn the curriculum. One way to do this is to make learning fun, especially with our early childhood kids.
